Bernice Smith Brashier, age 84, of Lucedale, MS finished her earthly service to her Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ, on January 4, 2019. She was born on June 23, 1934 to O.Z. and Alyene Smith in Richton, MS. She
graduated from Lucedale High School where she was crowned Mrs. Lucedale High her senior year. She
graduated from Mississippi Southern, and after a time working as a home demonstration agent with the
state of Mississippi, she began her lifetime career in public education. She loved teaching children who
came through her first grade classroom, and she especially enjoyed working with a wonderful team of
teachers who remained close long after retirement.
Bernice met Arnold, the man God chose to lead her and love her, in Quitman, MS. The two truly became
one during their 49 years of marriage. Today they worship our Savior together again. She was a
wonderful mother to her three children, always attending to their needs and supporting them in their
activities, studies, and service to Christ. To her grandchildren, she was affectionately known as "Maga."
This name originated with her first grandchild and today his child refers to her great-grandmother by the
same beloved name.
Bernice was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Lucedale. She taught a ladies' Sunday School class
for many years and also led numerous Bible studies. She loved her church family and missed them
deeply after she moved from Lucedale.
She is survived by a daughter, Beth Lott (Royce); two sons, Mark Brashier (Terri) and Paul Brashier (Kim);
grandchildren, Josh Christian (Stephani), Reese Lott, Kelley Beth Prabhakar (John), and Amelia Brashier;
great-grandchildren, Collins Christian and Stella Rose Christian; and sister, Gerrv Danford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Brashier; parents Oscar and Alyene Smith; and a
brother, Rayburn Smith.
Visitation will be Monday, January 7, 2019 from 9:00am to 11:00am at the First Baptist Church of Lucedale. Her funeral service will follow at 11:00am with Rev. Eddie Davidson officiating. Burial will be in the Magnolia Cemetery, Lucedale, MS.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the library ministry of First Baptist Church, Lucedale.
