Carlene Winifred Payne, age 70, of Tyler, AL, died Monday, March 16, 2020. Mrs. Payne was born June 26, 1949, in New Hampshire. She is the daughter of the late Carl Watson Smith and the late Francise Eleanor Appleton Smith.

Mrs. Payne retired as Vice President of Human Resources at Southern Guaranty Insurance. She received her bachelor's degree and Master of Business Administration degree from Troy State University. Mrs. Payne devoted her life to her husband, children, and grandchildren, and was happiest when she was with them. She was a joy to those who knew her and a true friend. Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Payne's husband, Rodney Michael Payne preceded her in death on May 22, 2015. They were married October 15, 1967. She is survived by her daughter and her husband, Mandy and Wes Carroll of Birmingham, AL, her son and his wife, Justin and Nicol Payne of Houston, TX, and by five grandchildren, grandsons Clay, Will, and Ben Carroll of Birmingham, AL, grandson, J.D. Payne, and granddaughter, Caitlin Payne of Houston, TX. She is also survived by brother, Steve Smith and sister, Stella Martin, both of Hubbard, OH.
