Joseph Ralph Cowart, Sr., age 83, of Lucedale, MS died Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at George Regional Medical Center of Lucedale, MS. Mr. Cowart was born June 7, 1937 in Mobile, AL. He is the son of the late Ralph Wiley Cowart and the late Willow Mae (Tanner) Cowart. He married Rose Murray on September 9, 1961 at Middlesex, NC.

Following high school graduation, Mr. Cowart attended Millsaps College where he received his BS degree. He then graduated from Duke University with his MBA and late his PHD. He became a college professor where he taught at VMI for 9 years and later at the University of Mobile for 17 years. Between his teaching years he was co-owner of Cowart Equipment Company in Lucedale from 1972-1985. He retired from teaching in 2002. Joe was very active in his community. He was a member of the Lucedale Rotary Club and served as its President for one term. Mr. Cowart was also an active member of First United Methodist Church of Lucedale.

He is survived by his wife: Rose (Murray) Cowart, one daughter: Ann (William) Brutkiewicz and three sons: Joseph (Andrea) Ralph Cowart Jr., Murray (Lena) Paul Cowart and John David Cowart; son-in-law, Douglas Phillips; grandson, Douglas Phillips; granddaughter, Rose Brutkiewicz; granddaughter, Lauren Cowart; granddaughter, Abigail Cowart; granddaughter, Holly Cowart; grandson, Jonathan Cowart; grandson, Gage Cowart.

Predeceased by his daughter, Willow Phillips, and brother, Paul Cowart

The funeral will be held 11:00 am on Monday, May 17, 2021 at First United Methodist Of Lucedale, 5101 Main Street, Lucedale, MS with Rev. David Newton officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery, Lucedale.

Calling hours will be Monday, May 17 from 10:00-11:00am at First United Methodist Church.
