Sarah Eugenia Howell, age 100, of Lucedale passed away on Monday, October 25, 2021 at Smith Manor of Lucedale, MS.  Mrs. Howell was born August 31, 1921, 30 minutes after her twin sister Mary Virginia Havard was born. In those days, babies were usually born at home. The story goes…everyone was outside waiting for the baby to arrive when the mid-wife runs out and says, "Mr. Roy, there are two babies!!" Eugenia, her twin sister Virginia, along with brothers Archie and William were raised in the Basin Community in George County, MS.

Eugenia often shared memories of her days of growing up on the family farm, annual camp meeting/tenting days at Salem Methodist Campground, and of her school days at Basin High School where she was on the basketball team. She was also very proud to say that she graduated as the valedictorian of her class.

Eugenia married Vaudie T. Howell in 1938, and they had four children, Gary, Larry, Cassie and a late surprise, Beverly. Ten years after Vaudie's death, Eugenia married Willard A. Howell. Eugenia was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved to cook, and was known for her delicious brownies and fruitcake cookies. She was a homemaker, and a member of First United Methodist Church of Lucedale.

Eugenia is the daughter of the late Roy and the late Lillie (Byrd) Fairley.  She married Vaudie T. Howell, who predeceased her on February 10, 1974, and the late Willard A. Howell, who predeceased her on March 25, 2013.

She is survived by three sons: Gary T. Howell, Larry W. (Fay) Howell and Glenn R. "Cassie" Howell; one daughter: Beverly H. Pitts; 6 Grandchildren: Bryan T. (Marla) Howell, Janine (Mark) Vincent, Jimmy (Lisa) Howell, Glenn R. (Joanna) Howell Jr., Carey (Larry) Paulson, and Tyler J. (Robin) Pitts; 10 Great Grandchildren; 11 Great-Great Grandchildren with another due in December; a host of cherished nieces and nephews; friends and caregivers.

Preceded in death by: husband, Vaudie T. Howell; husband, Willard A. Howell; brother: Archie Fairley; brother: William Fairley; sister: Virginia Havard; daughter-in-law: Jimmie Dee Howell; Great Granddaughter: Cassie Dee Howell Willis.

Pallbearers: Glenn R. Howell Jr., Tyler Pitts, Garreth Howell, Bradley Howell, Brandon Howell, and John Mark Vincent.

Honorary Pallbearers: Bryan Howell, Jimmy Howell, Jimmy Havard, Kent Fairley, Stanton Fairley, and Steve Fairley.

The funeral will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at First United Methodist Church of Lucedale, 311 Main Street, Lucedale, MS with Rev. David Newton, Rev. Larry White, and Rev. Mark J. Vincent officiating.  Burial will be in Howell Family Cemetery, Lucedale MS.
